Mind the gap.UK B2B e-invoicing becomes mandatory in April 2029. Making Tax Digital is already here. What that means for you

Accounting and ERP · United Kingdom

Mind the gap.

Aratun. The space between, handled.

Cloud accounting with the bookkeeping already done: photograph a document and it is booked, the bank reconciles itself, and the VAT return is built from the ledger rather than retyped into a portal. Ready for Making Tax Digital today, and for the digital tax rules arriving behind it.

Unlimited users and unlimited document capture on every plan. Built by a tax-authority integrator that has run mandatory e-invoicing for over a decade.

What we are strongest at

Every accounting package lists the same forty features. These are the three that decide whether your month-end is an afternoon or a fortnight.

Three things we already do properly.

Income and expense tracking

Money in and money out, coded to the right account on the day it happens. Cash, bank and card on one running ledger, with the receipt attached to the posting.

AI scan-to-book

Photograph a receipt and it is booked — line by line, with the VAT treatment and the account code decided on arrival. Not extracted into a queue for someone to key in.

Returns and filing

The VAT return is built from the postings, shown box by box, declared by you and filed through Making Tax Digital. Every figure traces back to a document.

Scan to book

Most software extracts a total. This one does the bookkeeping.

Capture is the front door here, not an add-on. Aratun reads the document the way a bookkeeper does: every line, the VAT treatment, the account code, the supplier account — and posts it. The image stays beside the posting for the life of the record.

Line level, not just the total
Quantities, rates, discounts and deposits stay as separate lines.

Making Tax Digital

The return is built from your ledger, not typed into a portal.

Aratun prepares all nine boxes from the postings, shows what each one is made of, and asks you to declare it before anything is submitted to HMRC. The digital link runs from the receipt you photographed to the figure you filed.

What comes next

Digital tax is not one deadline. It is a decade of them.

Making Tax Digital for VAT was the first. Income Tax follows on a falling threshold, e-invoicing follows that, and Europe is moving the same way. Aratun is built so each of those is a country pack we update, not a system you replace.

Financial core

  • Income and expense trackingEvery pound in and out, coded to the right account on the day it happens, not in a panic before the deadline.
  • AI scan-to-bookPhotograph it and it is booked. Not read into a queue for someone to key in — booked, with its lines, to the right account.
  • Invoicing and quotesQuote for the work, turn the quote into an invoice, send it with a way to pay, and let it chase itself.
  • Bills and purchasesSupplier invoices, purchase orders and payment runs, with approval before any money moves.
  • Bank feeds and reconciliationA live feed from the bank, matched against the ledger, with the reasoning shown for every suggestion.
  • Customers and suppliersOne card per trading partner: every document, every payment, the balance today.
  • ReportsProfit and loss, balance sheet, trial balance and ageing — and any figure opens the document behind it.
  • Multi-currencyInvoice, pay and report in more than one currency, with the differences posted for you.
  • BudgetsSet a budget by account and watch the variance while the month is still fixable.

Trade and operations

  • InventoryStock items, quantities and the cost that leaves the business with each sale.
  • Projects and job costingTime, materials and subcontractors booked to a job, so you know what it earned.
  • Fixed assetsAn asset register with a depreciation schedule that follows each country's rules.
  • Expenses and mileagePhotograph the receipt on the spot; the claim writes itself and goes for approval.
  • Tracking categoriesDepartment, site or cost centre on any posting, and every report can split by it.

Compliance and tax

  • VAT returns and filingThe return is built from the ledger, checked, declared and filed — not retyped into a portal.
  • e-InvoicingSend and receive structured invoices on the network each country runs, with validation before anything leaves.
  • PayrollPay people, file what follows, and post the cost to the ledger in the same run.
  • Audit trail and archiveNothing is quietly changed, and every figure keeps a digital link back to its document.

Intelligence and platform

  • The phone appThe same ledger in your pocket: capture a document, approve a bill, send an invoice from the van.
  • Multi-company and practicesOne login across every company you run or look after, with permissions set per person per company.
  • API and integrationsRead and write the ledger from your own systems, and export to the software you already use.

On the phone

The same ledger, in the van.

The phone app is not a viewer. It writes to the same ledger the browser does, so a receipt photographed at a petrol station is a posted expense before you have pulled away, and a bill can be approved between two jobs.

Capture with the camera

One engine

A group with entities in three countries should not run three accounting systems. The ledger is shared; the tax logic is packed per country.

The country is a property of the company, not of the domain.

How it runs

Capture, reconcile, file.

  1. 01

    Capture

Documents arrive by photograph, email, bank feed or e-invoicing network, and become postings.

  2. 02

    Reconcile

The bank, the ledger and your trading partners are brought into agreement, with the exceptions listed.

  3. 03

    File

The return is prepared from those postings and submitted, with the audit trail attached.

We are not bringing a theory. We are bringing scar tissue.
Türkiye has operated mandatory e-invoicing for more than a decade. We know what breaks in year three, not year one.

Questions

The things finance directors ask first.

Is Aratun recognised by HMRC?

Not yet. Recognition follows a live submission through the production API, and we will say so on this page the day we are listed. Until then we say what is true: the VAT return is built for Making Tax Digital.

How is this different from the other cloud accounting packages?

Three ways. Capture is the core of the product rather than an add-on, so most documents are booked without anyone keying them in. Nothing is metered — unlimited users and unlimited documents on every plan, including the entry one. And the e-invoicing network work is ours rather than a third party's, built in a market that has been mandatory for over a decade.

Can we move our books across?

Yes. We import the chart of accounts, contacts, open invoices and bills, and the bank history you have, from Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or a CSV. We will tell you before you start what will not come across cleanly.

Do we have to do anything about 2029 now?

No. The mandate is years away and the detailed roadmap is expected at the November 2026 Budget. What is worth doing now is making sure your invoice data is clean and structured, because that is the part that takes time.

Can we run more than one country in one system?

Yes. The engine is country-independent and each company carries its own pack: chart of accounts, tax rates, filings and e-document rules.

Does this replace our accountant?

No. It gives them a ledger that reconciles and a filing they can check. Practices hold several client companies under one login, with permissions per person.

Bring us the document that will not go through.

A receipt nothing reads, a rejection you cannot explain, or a reconciliation that will not close. That is a better demo than a slide deck.
